Downtown hotel good. Big box hotel that draws from our quaint historic downtown bad.

unnamed-2 unnamed-1We agree, a downtown hotel is very important for economic development, and Frederick City needs one.

But why are City and County officials rallying around a 7 story big box Marriott that will block the view of the spires and dominate the Carroll Creek Promenade?

Just because its easy? Agreements are moving fast.  Has anyone seen the Historic Preservation Commission report, or the financials on this?

The abolitionist poet John Greenleaf Whittier immortalized this view of Frederick in his poem to Barbara Fritchie: “The clustered spires of Frederick stand. Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.”

Forever gone will be that view, in its place 7 stories with a large MARRIOTT sign ablaze at night.
